CASE STUDY
Managing Pre-Diabetes on an Irregular Work Schedule
The Patient:
‘Rachel’ is a 56 year old shift worker. She often starts work at 5am, while her husband works a regular 9-5. She was referred to us by her PCP following a diagnosis of pre-diabetes.
*Patient name has been changed to protect the privacy of the individual.
The Challenge:
Rachel is often torn between going to go to bed early, and the desire to spend quality time with her husband. This leads to inconsistent sleep routines, and difficulties in planning meals and exercise routines.
Our Program of Support:
Our first step was sleep tracking, which helped identify barriers to getting a good night’s sleep. We then worked with Rachel to identify solutions.
She started prioritizing ‘day dates’ with her husband, and explained to him how important it was for her to go to bed early. She also started planning her evening routine, scheduling “me time” before bed, and winding down with a good book.
The Results
Rachel is still in the early stages of addressing her pre-diabetes, but she has already lost 10 pounds, and reduced her fasting blood glucose to <100.
She now reports feeling much more energy throughout the day. She’s also finding it easier to exercise and eat healthier as a result of these changes.
