Food On the Go: Healthy Snacks For When You’re Rushing Out the Door

You’re running out the door. You’re late for work. Or the school run. Or an important meeting. And you just don’t have time to prepare a healthy snack or a meal.

We get it, because we’ve been there. (And let’s face it, we’ll likely be there again.)

It’s always a good idea to have a few go-to options up your sleeve. Things you can throw together in a hurry without even thinking. Below are some of our favorites.

Snacks on the Go

No-Bake Energy Balls:

A little nut butter, some oats, nuts, maybe some chocolate chips. A batch of these comes together in seconds in the blender—and you can pre-make them to last a week or more. There are plenty of recipes out there, but check out one of our favorites over at Real Food Dietitians.

Chicken Wrap:

Leftover or rotisserie chicken is a wonderful thing to keep in the fridge. Just toss it in a whole grain tortilla with some cheese and spinach—maybe some dressing or mustard as an optional extra- and you have a healthy lunch in seconds.

Custom Trail Mix:

You know those expensive bags of trail mix at the grocery store? They’re really just a bag of nuts and seeds. So why not make your own? Not only will you save money, but you can craft your ideal mix of ingredients. Almonds, peanuts, dried fruit, seeds crispy chickpeas, chocolate chips - maybe even a little spice - you can really go crazy and experiment.

Sliced Apple and Dip:

Didn’t have time to prepare something over the weekend? No worries. Slice up an apple, squeeze a little lemon on it to prevent it from browning, and then pair it with some yogurt and nut butter mixed together.

Egg and Avocado:

Take a sneak peak into one of our fridges, and the chances are you’ll find a batch of hard boiled eggs. They’re a terrific addition to salads or sandwiches, or you can mash them up with a little avocado, salt and pepper,. and use them as a dip, or a spread, or just enjoy with a spoon.

These ideas are just a starting point. There are so many ways to adapt easy, quick recipes for an on-the-go snack or meal.
