How to Find Joy in Everyday Movement (Yes, Joy!)

If you’re one of those folks who drives by the local CrossFit Gym and thinks ‘that could never be me,’ we’re here to let you into a little secret:

It really doesn’t have to be.

At Whole Health Partners, we believe that you don’t need to overthink exercise. Joyful, healthy movement can encompass so much more than traditional sports or fitness routines. (Yes, even walking to a restaurant counts!)

This is why we often make physical movement a secondary goal, after tackling more complex things like nutrition and sleep with our patients.

Are you looking to move more? Here are three core ideas to help you get started:

DAILY MOVEMENT: Find ways to incorporate movement, however simple, into your everyday routine.

  • Walking kids to the bus stop instead of driving, wall push ups while your coffee or tea is brewing, or pacing around the couch during commercial breaks are some ideas to get started.

JOYFUL MOVEMENT: This isn’t supposed to be about 'punishment' or ‘penance.’ So find activities that bring you joy, connection and a sense of reward.

  • Gardening, cleaning (or appreciating the result of!), dancing, biking around the neighborhood, or meeting friends for walking dates all count as movement.

DIVERSE MOVEMENT: There are many different types of movement—so switch it up to keep yourself engaged and excited. Ideally, you want to mix cardio (something that leaves you out of breath), with strength (something that works your muscles), and balance (e.g. yoga, or stretching, or a dance party with the kiddos!).

Most importantly, though, make movement fun. And be kind to yourself.
